A common piece of advice that Jayanta Bandyopadhyay offers to those in the Cauvery basin and Colorado is that they can be better off by growing low water-consuming crops. He argues that regions under chronic water scarcity, such as the Cauvery basin, come under further stress by cultivating high water-consuming crops like rice. “Similar is the case with Colorado that produces a high water-consuming fodder crop like alfalfa,” writes Bandyopadhyay in Water, Ecosystems and Society: A confluence of disciplines.
