Retail margins

The mark-up of a small shop in India is less than the mark-up of supermarkets in the western world, the expenses are much smaller, and the conceptual mode of operation and therefore the ineffectiveness are the same, writes Eliyahu M. Goldratt in The Choice. “The combined effect is that most small shops in India make slightly less than one per cent net profit on sales.”
