Not only does elite life loom large in the imagination of Indians today, but Indians also increasingly see elite life as middle class life, says Steve Derné in Globalization on the Ground. He informs that Western academics use the term ‘middle class’ to refer to the 5 per cent of Indians who speak English well, or the 6 per cent of households with income that allows them to purchase a scooter.
